Creative Ceramics
Mañana venid pronto, que haremos cosas muy bonitas.
~Antoni Gaudí
During the third week of the Spanish Language and Culture program in Barcelona, the students went to La Ceramicaría to paint a ceramics piece. Barcelona boasts beautiful ceramic decorations on many buildings. Famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí used the “trencadís” technique that puts together irregular pieces of ceramics or glass to create mosaics, and this style became a hallmark of Gaudí’s famous structures in Barcelona, such as Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell, and Casa Batllò. For this activity, the students did not create mosaics; they designed and painted a ceramic piece. Having the chance to be creative with a hands-on project was fun and relaxing, and it was one of the favorite activities of the week. The students are looking forward to seeing their finished works of art after the shop glazes and fires the ceramics.
