La Sagrada Familia
Sagrada Familia is the iconic attraction in Barcelona, and the Spanish Language & Culture students had the opportunity to tour the magnificent basilica this week. Before our visit, the students learned about the renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi and his most stunning work, and then they played a lively game of Kahoot to review.
The Building of Sagrada Familia
Construction of the Sagrada Familia began in 1882, and Gaudí took over the construction in 1883. Gaudí devoted the rest of his life to the basilica (while also working on other projects), and he is buried in its crypt. When he died, about one quarter of the building was complete, and after more than 140 years, the construction is still ongoing. The image below shows a model of what is already complete (in gray) and what remains to be done (in yellow). The structure should be complete in 2026 - for the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death - although sculptures and decorative details will take another eight years.
Touring Sagrada Familia
Students began their tour on the east side with the Nativity facade. This side is very detailed and is filled with symbolism.
When the students entered the beautiful basilica, they were in awe. The central nave rises to astonishing heights with large tree-like columns that reach the vaulted ceilings, and the stained glass windows color the interior in brilliant shades of orange and red on the east and blue and green on the west. Gaudí's work is architectural genius, and he took much of his inspiration from nature.
The students exited the building on the west side to see the stark Passion facade, which stands in sharp contrast to the ornate Nativity facade. The Glory facade to the north is still under construction.
The tour guide did a good job of explaining the building and its symbols in comprehensible Spanish while also checking for understanding, so the students enjoyed this amazing opportunity to see Sagrada Familia while also practicing their language skills, a truly special immersive experience.
