Housing & Meals
Housing
Everything students need is within walking distance from their home, including various restaurants, supermarkets, a pharmacy, and easily accessible public transport options.
The University of Auckland (UoA) student housing offers guaranteed accommodation for all study abroad who apply before the deadline. These accommodations are self-catered residences that provide an independent lifestyle while ensuring a supportive community environment. All listed UoA housing accommodations are within easy walking distance to the City Campus and Auckland city center, providing convenient access to academic facilities and urban amenities.
Homestays provide students with the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Auckland's diverse culture. Auckland is a multicultural city, and students will stay with families from various nationalities, including Kiwis. These homes are located within a 45-minute to 1-hour public transport commute of CIEE Auckland. The homestay experience includes breakfast and dinner from Monday to Sunday. Students will have the freedom to come and go as they please while spending quality time with their host families, gaining firsthand insight into everyday life in Auckland.
Standard Housing: Includes a single room in an apartment/residence hall or a homestay.
- Shared Apartment/Residence Hall: Single accommodation with shared kitchen and bathrooms within a 5-minute walk of City Campus and a 10- to 15- minute walk of CIEE Auckland. All residents have access to common areas such as lounges, study rooms, and recreational spaces
- Homestays: Single accommodation in a homestay within a 45- to 60-minute commute of CIEE Auckland. Students receive two meals per day – breakfast and dinner – served by the family. Provide students with the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Auckland's diverse culture. Auckland is a multicultural city, and students will stay with families from various nationalities, including Kiwis. These homes are located within a 45-minute to 1-hour public transport commute of CIEE Auckland. The homestay experience includes breakfast and dinner from Monday to Sunday. Students will have the freedom to come and go as they please while spending quality time with their host families, gaining firsthand insight into everyday life in Auckland.
Select Housing: Single accommodation in a studio apartment with a private bathroom and kitchenette within a 5-minute walk of City Campus and a 10- to 15-minute walk of CIEE Auckland. All residents have access to common areas such as lounges, study rooms, and recreational spaces. Select Housing requires an additional fee.
A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Select housing option requires an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.
Meals
- University of Auckland Housing: UoA student housing for study abroad students is self-catered, meaning residents are responsible for their own meals. Each apartment includes a fully equipped kitchen, allowing students to cook independently while enjoying the flexibility of preparing meals that suit their preferences and dietary needs. The self-catered model fosters a sense of independence while still providing access to shared communal spaces where students can connect and socialize.
- Homestays: Students receive two meals per day—breakfast and dinner—prepared by their host family. Breakfast is typically a self-serve meal, while dinner is a shared experience, offering students the opportunity to engage with their hosts and experience home-cooked local cuisine. Students are responsible for arranging their own lunch, allowing them the flexibility to explore Auckland’s diverse food options. Homestays provide a welcoming environment where students can experience New Zealand hospitality while enjoying nutritious, home-prepared meals.
Academics
The CIEE Engineering, Technology, and Science (ETS) Program in Auckland provides a rigorous and immersive academic experience, blending hands-on learning, research-driven coursework, and real-world applications. Students take a combination of CIEE-administered courses and University of Auckland (UoA) courses, allowing them to engage with New Zealand’s top-ranked STEM programs while benefiting from CIEE’s supportive, small-class environment.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
Program Fees
CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel protection with benefits.
Financial Aid
CIEE offers the most grants and scholarships of any study abroad organization, including $8 million/year in travel grants, merit-based scholarships, institutional and MSI grants, and Gilman Go Global Grants.
