Academic Culture

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday, providing students with a concentrated schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This condensed format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in Auckland. Attendance in CIEE classes is strictly enforced, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits.

CIEE courses, augmented by Canvas Learning Management System, are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Similar to classes at U.S. institutions, students should expect to spend an average of two hours of preparation and study for each hour in CIEE classes.

The academic environment at the University of Auckland combines traditional teaching methods and contemporary pedagogical approaches. Lectures are typically led by instructors who foster discussions and encourage active participation from students, like the structure often seen in U.S. higher education institutions.

Classes are scheduled throughout the week, Monday to Friday, offering flexibility to accommodate students' various commitments. Attendance is emphasized, with students expected to attend a significant portion of face-to-face sessions, usually around 75-80%, mirroring expectations in many U.S. universities.

Daily assignments and readings are common, disseminated through online platforms or email, allowing students to engage with course material beyond the classroom. Professors often provide access to required materials either online or through the university library, reducing the need for students to purchase textbooks, a practice also common in U.S. universities.

ASU Courses: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

At CIEE Auckland, courses run Monday through Thursday, providing an intensive academic schedule that allows for focused study and cultural exploration. Attendance is strictly monitored for both classes and required excursions, offering a structured and immersive experience that combines rigorous coursework with hands-on learning to deepen students' academic and cultural understanding. The program integrates real-world experience through co-curricular excursions, guest lectures, and hands-on research opportunities in Auckland’s thriving technology and science sectors.

At the University of Auckland, courses blend lectures with tutorials and labs to create a comprehensive academic experience. Lectures cover essential material, while tutorials and labs enable students to engage in small group discussions, hands-on projects, and field-based learning. Classes meet 2-3 times weekly, from Monday through Friday, balancing independent study with collaborative activities, and instructors encourage students to think critically and apply theory to practical situations, aligning with U.S. academic methods.

New Zealand universities emphasize self-directed learning, expecting students to engage with daily assignments and readings independently, fostering discipline and self-motivation.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

Assessment at the University of Auckland is rigorous, with continuous assessment methods that might include weekly quizzes, essays, project reports, a midterm, tutorial/seminar participation and performance, in-class presentations, and practical and final exams. Students can expect a combination of individual assignments and group projects, designed to develop both independent and collaborative skills.

CIEE reports final grades for host institution courses using recommended U.S. letter grade equivalencies, following a predetermined grade conversion scale. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. The U.S. grading scale of A – F is used.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors.
