How does Open Campus Work?
Design Your Own Eco-Immersive Experience
Designed for students interested in sustainability, CIEE invites you to design your own eco-immersive Open Campus Block experience by enrolling in three consecutive six-week blocks across sustainability-focused themes, including: Coastal Approaches to a Changing Climate; Innovative Solutions in Green Cities; Growing Green Economies in the Asia-Pacific; Travel by Train; and Forests to Cities.
These thematic groupings are just a glimpse of what’s possible when you customize your own study abroad program based on your course interests, favorite destinations, and personal passions.

Coastal Approaches to a Changing Climate
Head out on a global sustainability expedition as you explore environmental solutions in coastal ecosystems. This collection of accomplished cities is leading the way in addressing coastal environmental challenges, showcasing the power of nature-inspired innovation.
This exploration of global sustainability efforts will leave you inspired and ready to embrace a greener future.
Featured cities include:
Athens, Greece: To counter coastal erosion and extreme heat, the city invests in green infrastructure, restoring natural shorelines and expanding urban greenery to enhance resilience. It has also implemented solar-powered street lighting, as well as initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.
Amsterdam, Netherlands: The city combats rising sea levels with an advanced flood management system, including innovative water plazas and floating neighborhoods that adapt to changing conditions. There’s also a strong focus to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and be climate neutral by 2050.
- Copenhagen, Denmark: This capital integrates stormwater management with urban design, using parks and canals to prevent flooding while promoting sustainable waterfront development. It also aims to derive 50% of electricity from offshore wind power by 2030 and be independent from fossils by 2050.

Innovative Solutions in Green Cities
Green cities showcase a range of creative approaches to tackle environmental challenges while improving quality of life for their residents.
These cities serve as inspiring examples of how innovative solutions can create greener, more livable urban environments for future generations.
These top-tier regions include:
Cape Town, South Africa: A leader in water conservation and renewable energy initiatives, the city has implemented innovative water-saving strategies – like desalination plants, groundwater extraction, and extensive public awareness campaigns – as well a commitment to reduce reliance on fossil fuels by utilizing solar and wind energy.
- Rome, Italy: The city promotes energy efficiency in historic buildings and expands renewable energy usage. It also invests in eco-friendly public transportation, including electric buses, and encourages urban greening through reforestation and the creation of green corridors to enhance biodiversity and combat heat.
- London, England: Aiming for a net-zero emissions goal, the city promotes renewable energy projects and implementing ambitious energy efficiency strategies. Rooftop gardens, vertical greenery, and urban parks are encouraged to improve air quality, reduce flooding risks, and keep the city cool.

Travel by Train – Explore Urban Sustainability in Europe
Take off on a sustainable European adventure as you explore urban sustainability initiatives by train. This collection takes you through influential cities that embrace eco-friendly innovation and promote green living at every turn.
Journeying across Europe will deepen your appreciation for sustainability efforts and inspire you to join the movement toward a greener future.
Destinations include:
London, England: The city champions sustainability with clean energy, electric vehicles, and a robust public transport system. Its low-emission zone, smart grids, and renewable energy push reduce carbon emissions, while green spaces enhance urban life.
- Paris, France: This capital uses connected devices and sensor technology – like temperature, motion, cameras – to benchmark energy performance and detect infrastructure malfunctions, resulting in significant energy savings.
Berlin, Germany: The city’s goal is to be carbon neutral by 2050, supporting local efforts, green startups, zero-waste dining, and packaging-free supermarkets. It invests in artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and quantum computing.

Growing Green Economies in the Asia-Pacific
Cities across the Asia-Pacific region are embracing sustainability to foster economic growth while preserving the environment. Through renewable energy, green infrastructure, and innovative policies, these urban centers are setting new standards for eco-friendly development.
Traveling through Asia and the Pacific will open your eyes to new ways of approaching sustainability.
Top cities include:
- Singapore: The city-state mandates all new buildings replace lost greenery through innovative designs like green towers, rooftop gardens, and vertical greenery. Plus, Singapore aims to reach peak emissions by 2028 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
