Student Spotlight: My Summer in Spain by Chisom Eke

A summer in Spain was something I once believed I would never experience—until now. From the Bronx to Barcelona, learning the cultural differences has been quite the ride. When I landed at the airport, the first thing I noticed was a rainbow of people from Spain and beyond, and the restrooms labeled as “WC”—which left me utterly confused. I thought to myself did it stand for “Wash Center"? Despite my concerns about the language barrier, I felt an immediate connection with my host family, Alicia and Cristian. To be honest, my Spanish wasn't very good at the time, but I managed to communicate with them and learn from them. As I attended my classes in the afternoons at the CIEE center, my Spanish gradually improved. I gained different perspectives, and finally learned that “WC” stands for Water Closet.

Trip to Tarragona

From going hiking for the first time in the mountains with my host family, visiting La Sagrada Familia, Barceloneta Beach, La Boqueria, Tarragona, and Parque Guell, to learning flamenco dances, making traditional Spanish empanadas, drawing graffiti art, I have savored every moment. Throughout this journey, I not only learned about the customs of Spain but also discovered a lot about myself. Initially, I wasn’t confident in my Spanish, I was nervous about living with pets, and I doubted I would form strong bonds in Spain—but I was proven wrong. Now, I can speak in full sentences in Spanish with confidence, adore my host family’s dog, Yoda, and cat, Michi, and have formed bonds with my roommates. I've also met amazing people, including fellow students, our wonderful program leader, Clare, and our outstanding teacher, Suzanna. This trip to Barcelona pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me develop greater self-confidence. I know I'll return to New York City with new abilities and knowledge.
