A stroll through the historic Gothic Quarter
With full water bottles and comfortable walking shoes, the students were transported back to medieval Barcelona by following a tour around the famous Gothic Quarter.
Students were provided with radios and disposable earphones to better hear their tour guide so that they could be wowed by insider knowledge only a local would know. And yes, the tour was almost completely in Spanish. They started on the luxurious Passeig de Gracia where they saw stores like Cartier, Louis Vuitton, etc. and learned about the influence Gaudi had on Spanish architecture.
After weaving through the many tourists on that street and in Placa Catalunya, they made their way to the narrow streets of the Quarter where they saw Roman ruins and the picturesque Cathedral of Barcelona.
Students stopped for pictures beautiful enough to impress their friends at home, and then it was back to the CIEE center for lunch and the first Spanish class of the summer.
