A Divided Berlin
Students on both Thursday and Friday were given the chance to see not only where the former Berlin Wall stood, but where the infamous Death Strip once prevented East Germans from fleeing to the West. This divide, which separated friends and families for 28 years, is almost impossible to imagine.
Bernauer Straße, a street that the wall cut through, provides a look at how East Germans risked everything to escape the Communist East. On our tour, students learned of the harrowing escape attempts that often resulted in East Germans losing their lives. From jumping out of buildings to digging underground tunnels, we got a glimpse at just how desperate individuals were to flee to the West.
