This week, two groups of American high school students part of CIEE’s High School Summer Abroad program embarked on an unforgettable journey as part of their immersive Spanish Language & Culture program in Barcelona. The highlight of their trip was a visit to Escuela Enjoy Cooking in Barcelona, where they had the opportunity to dive deep into the rich culinary traditions of Spain through a hands-on tapas-making workshop. The excitement was palpable as they traded their textbooks for aprons, ready to master the art of creating authentic Spanish tapas. Guided by two expert chefs, the students prepared a variety of famous dishes including the classic Spanish tortilla, pintxos de País Vasco, and delicious empanadillas.

Throughout the workshop, the students didn't just learn new recipes—they were introduced to the cultural and historical significance behind each dish. They learned how Spanish cuisine is deeply rooted in regional traditions, with each tapa telling a story of its origin. The students were particularly fascinated by a demonstration of molecular gastronomy, where they turned roasted pepper into a foam, blending modern culinary techniques with traditional flavors.

The experience was about more than just cooking; it was an exploration of the social aspect of tapas. The students discovered that tapas are not merely food, but a way of life in Spain—an embodiment of social interaction and community. Preparing, sharing, and savoring tapas fostered a sense of camaraderie among the students, mirroring the Spanish tradition of bonding over shared meals. By the end of the workshop, they not only improved their Spanish language skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for Spanish culture, making their trip to Escuela Enjoy Cooking a memorable and enriching adventure — while leaving the cooking school with full stomachs!
