Madrid’s influence in politics, education, science, entertainment, media, fashion, and arts makes it an important international metropolis, and the major hub in southern Europe. Spain’s capital city is also its largest, with a historic center dating back to the Habsburg Empire. . A huge variety of tapas bars, dance shows, concerts, parks, soccer matches, bustling neighborhoods, contemporary theater and cinema, and world-renowned art museums make it a lively place to live and learn. Only steps away from the historic Puerta del Sol, the CIEE Madrid is located in the heart of downtown with its vibrant cultural offering.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Madrid.
The Culture
Featured Excursion
Visit the world heritage site of El Escorial´s Royal Palace, Kings´ Pantheon, and Monastery built under the reign of King Philip II of Spain in the 1500s. Located in the mountains about a one-hour drive north of Madrid, El Escorial’s impressive architecture offers visitors a glimpse into the daily life of the royal court, where decisions were made at the height of the Spanish Empire as a global powerhouse. Students have free time to explore the neighboring 18th-century village of San Lorenzo.
Other Excursions & Activities
- Explore beyond Madrid with day trips to the medieval city of Toledo or other UNESCO World Heritage cities such as Alcalá de Henares.
- Soak up Spanish culture with museum visits, dance workshops, urban art and graffiti tours, and popular neighborhood visits in Lavapiés, Malasaña, or La Latina.
- Is the outdoors more your style? Try kayaking, snow walking, or hiking in the outskirts of Madrid city.
Projects
Enrich your experience with one of three optional Academic Projects.
Students interested in one of the following Academic Projects must submit additional materials as part of their application:
- Internships. Build new skills and intercultural competencies with a CIEE Internship and become an active member of the Madrid professional environment. Gain on-the-job experience at a start-up tech firm, a financial company, or other modern business. Students applying for the internship should have an advanced level of Spanish.
- Research. Pursue a research project of your own design incorporating independent, local fieldwork.
- Service-learning. Combine course-based learning with practical, relevant project experience to meet a community-defined need. Students applying should have an advanced level of Spanish.
Local Engagement
Together with your courses, gain unique exposure to the press rooms of Spain’s leading media, international businesses, world-renowned museums, state-of-the-art clinics, and historic concert venues. CIEE Madrid faculty design courses that take students outside the classroom to draw from Madrid as an experiential laboratory.

Housing & Meals
Housing
CIEE Madrid offers diverse housing options to maximize your study abroad experience, including homestays, student residence halls, or shared apartments in several city districts. All housing options are located near supermarkets, restaurants, gyms, and public transport and provide the convenience of urban living in one of Europe´s largest cosmopolitan city settings.
Student housing in Madrid typically looks different than what you may be used to in the U.S. Unlike most college campuses, CIEE does not own or manage student housing in Madrid. We work within local housing networks to carefully identify housing partners, vendors, and homestay hosts that can offer students a safe and culturally active living experience. All Madrid housing sizes, layouts, room designs, and amenities will vary and will have their own distinct features. Living in Madrid may mean downsizing for the duration of your stay as student housing space and location are at a premium (for example, living space, kitchen, washing machines or bedroom size may be smaller than what you´re used to at home).
Standard Housing: Includes a single room at a homestay or a double room at a shared apartment or student dorm located with easy transport access and within a 70-minute commute from Madrid’s city center.
Homestays offer socially active hosts who allow for a lot of student independence, no curfew, kitchen access for food storage, living room, Wi-Fi, weekly laundry, and a bathroom shared with the host. Hosts provide two meals a day during the week.
Please note there is no homestay option in Open Campus Block I.
Shared apartments are modest in size, featuring fewer amenities with basic furniture, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi access, maintenance repair services, bed linens and towels, and a kitchen. Meals are not included in the dorms or apartments.
Student dorms are modern, offer Wi-Fi access, and typically have an individual or shared kitchen.
Select Housing: Includes a guaranteed single room at a shared apartment or residence hall with a commute time and within 70 minutes from Madrid’s city center. Shared apartments are modest in size, featuring a few amenities with basic furniture, a laundry machine, Wi-Fi access, maintenance repair services, bed linens and towels, and a kitchen. Meals are not included in the dorms or apartments. Student residence halls are modern, offer Wi-Fi access, and typically house students in single bedrooms with an individual or shared kitchen. Select housing requires an additional fee. Please note that you may be placed in housing where you will share common spaces in your accommodations with other CIEE students who opted for a different housing category.
Select Housing Plus: Limited available option that includes a guaranteed single room at a shared apartment or residence hall with an average commute time of 30 minutes to Madrid’s city center. Shared apartments are modest in size, featuring a few amenities with basic furniture, a laundry machine, Wi-Fi access, maintenance repair services, bed linens and towels, and a kitchen. Meals are not included in the dorms or apartments. Student Dorms are modern, offer Wi-Fi access, and typically have an individual or shared kitchen. Select Plus housing requires an additional fee. Please note that you may be placed in housing where you will share common spaces in your accommodations with other CIEE students who opted for a different housing category.
A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive.
Meals
Homestays: Students have breakfast and dinner with their host families, and they are responsible for lunch. Students do not typically have access to use the kitchen at the host family home.
Residence Halls/Shared Apartments: Meals are not included. Residence halls and apartments have direct access to supermarkets, restaurants, public transport, and independent dining halls. Students can purchase dining hall meal plans on their own if offered by the residence hall management.
Academics
Students enroll in one, two, or three six-week blocks, taking two courses during each block. This program gives students the flexibility to stay in Madrid the entire time or spend other blocks at our Open Campus Block locations in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dublin, Kyoto, London, Monteverde, Paris, Rome, Santiago, Singapore, Shanghai, Sydney, and Yucatán.
Students can choose from a variety of disciplines within seven different tracks: Art and Architecture, Business; Communications, Journalism, and New Media; Global and Community Health; International Relations and Political Science; Language, Literature, and Culture, or STEM and Society.
CIEE Madrid: Classes are held at the CIEE Madrid near Puerta del Sol. The Center includes classrooms, a lounge, Wi-Fi, and experienced staff that support daily life in Madrid. Most courses are taught in English by CIEE faculty.
Our strong relationships with Madrid’s most respected universities and research institutions allow us to offer top-quality courses, taught by local faculty. A core group of CIEE faculty members serve as professors and help coordinate academic projects. Working with CIEE resident staff, the faculty arrange guest lectures, excursions, activities, and more.
Arizona State University: Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar, so you can study abroad with CIEE while continuing to meet all your academic goals.

- Courses are listed below by block and track; course list subject to change. Courses are in English unless otherwise noted. “GI” denotes courses that are offered at multiple CIEE locations.
- Use the Course Comparison Tools to compare classes offered across all Open Campus Block programs for each block:
- Students studying for three blocks who wish to complete a lab course will be required to opt out of one course to remain within the program credit range.
- Many CIEE courses are available in multiple CIEE locations. To help ensure you can enroll in the courses you need, some courses may be facilitated as a Hybrid course by an instructor from a location separate from your own. In a Hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location. However, regardless of your location, you will apply what you learn from the instructor and course materials in your location. Hybrid courses can be identified in the course list as those whose course codes end in “CIEE” – open the syllabus to see the instruction location, if known.
Hybrid Courses
Most courses are taught face-to-face and offered only for students at one location. CIEE offers some courses in a hybrid format, available to multiple program locations to increase course choices. A hybrid class is taught synchronously in a classroom in one location, and students in the program at other CIEE locations join live online. Hybrid courses can be identified in the course list as those whose course codes end in “CIEE”, and the title will include the location of instruction. Regardless of your location, you will apply what you learn from the instructor and course materials in your location. Co-curricular activities are tailored to each student’s location to promote local, experiential, and intercultural learning for all.
Academic Projects
- Academic Projects will be offered onsite (either in-person or remotely) or remotely at another Open Campus Block location, dependent on availability and in compliance with local health and safety regulations.
- Academic Project placement will be designed based on the student’s project learning goals, qualifications, resume, and availability of placements in location or within the Open Campus Block network either in-person or remotely. The process is highly individualized and goal oriented. Students enrolled in an Academic Project will receive additional academic support that informs and enhances the placement experience.
- Internships and Service-Learning are only available in Spanish, therefore only students with advanced Spanish language ability are eligible; a language assessment will be required.
- Students applying for an Academic Project must submit additional materials during the course selection process.
Language Classes
- During course selection students interested in a non-introductory Spanish language course, Internship, or Service-Learning Project will be instructed to take an online Spanish language assessment to determine their proficiency level; enrollment will be finalized on site and is based on assessment outcomes.
- Students may add the non-credit “Survival Spanish” course to their course load during the on-site orientation.

Dates & Fees
You get more for every dollar when you study abroad with CIEE, because our high-quality programs include everything from excursions to insurance. There are no hidden charges, and no disappointing surprises when you arrive.
In blocks I and II, courses and formal activities end on the last Thursday of the block, and in block III, on the last Friday. Students are free to use the time between blocks as they choose, either remaining in their location or using the time for their own travel pursuits. Students changing locations must check into their new Open Campus Network location by the first Monday of the block for local orientation, with classes starting on the first Wednesday of each block. In all cases, students are provided with continuous accommodation, and should speak with CIEE staff for more details.
