My Unforgettable Semester Abroad in Madrid
By: Mariah Kirylo
Madrid has been a transformative experience for me, letting me get a sense of the Spanish life/testament to history and allowing academic growth as well developing forever connections with people from around the world. Madrid was the perfect location for me to immerse myself in my studies and develop a love of international marketing as an undergraduate student. As soon as I stepped foot into the city, its vibrant energy combined with centuries of history and modernity had me hooked.
One of the few highlights of my semester has been wandering the streets and finding cultural gems in Madrid. With its mix of neighborhoods, from the high energy Gran Vía to the quirky alleyways of Malasaña, there are countless ways and places in which you can practice your Spanish with locals. It has allowed me to use the language on a much broader base, with more confidence and also many new connections among locals.
My classes have been so rewarding academically. I've learned how to choose the right tools for each possible business strategy on a worldwide level in my International Marketing and Management classes, learning with theoretical cases of some real popular names today like Zara or Real Madrid. This practical experience has broadened my perspective on how Spanish companies grow and succeed worldwide.
The thing that I enjoyed the most is making a community with national and international students. Being able to share experiences with others who are just as excited about venturing and learning has enriched my journey, and I have made lifelong friends because of it.
It will be hard to leave Madrid but I am so grateful for every second here and excited about taking back new perspectives and skills, with some unforgettable memories too. I am looking forward to encouraging other students, as they set off on their own global adventures and come back convinced by the beauty of experiencing life in a new country.
