Say hello to Milan, the second-largest city in Italy and the country’s unofficial fashion capital. Home to some of Italy’s major fashion brands, a booming wine industry, one of the oldest shopping centers in the world (the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II), and a thriving international student community, there is plenty to experience and explore in the cosmopolitan city of Milan.
When you study abroad in Milan, you call the Lombardy region of northern Italy home. Here, you’ll have every opportunity to indulge in one of the canal-side cafés or restaurants in the Navigli District, explore the Sforzesco Castle to discover the city’s history, and much more while immersing yourself in the local culture.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Milan.
The Culture
Excursions & Activities
Activities are subject to change at CIEE's discretion to adapt to local circumstances and participant feedback. Our goal when revising activities and itineraries is always to enhance your experience. Every activity is designed to provide you with a deep immersion in your topic, local culture and sights. Activities may include:
- Cooking Classes
- Exploring Lake Como, the most beautiful of the northern Italian lakes
- Taking excursions to emblematic Italian towns like Bologna, Bergamo, or Verona
- Participating in a cooking and/or wine-tasting session to complement gastronomy-based courses
- Going on guided visits to Milan’s iconic monuments, like the Duomo or Santa Maria delle Grazie
- Participating in guided visits to some of Milan’s museums and galleries, like Fondazione Prada or the Pinacoteca di Brera
- Hiking along the beautiful coastline of Cinque Terra

Housing & Meals
Housing
CIEE Milan offers diverse housing options to ensure you're comfortable in your home away from home. From shared apartments to residence halls, we will strive to meet your accommodation preferences. All housing has direct access to plenty of shopping, supermarkets, restaurants, and public transportation.
Standard Housing: Includes a double room in an apartment or residence hall. Apartments and residence halls feature furnished double rooms, access to a kitchen and shared common spaces, and are located under 40 minutes from the city center.
Select Housing: Includes a limited number of single rooms in an apartment or residence hall. Both apartments and residence halls feature furnished single rooms, access to a shared kitchen and common spaces, and are located under 40 minutes from the city center. Select housing requires an additional fee.
Select Plus Housing: Includes a limited number of single rooms in an apartment or residence hall. Both apartments and residence halls feature furnished single rooms, access to a shared kitchen and common spaces, and are under 30 minutes from the city center. Select Plus housing requires an additional fee.
A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive.

Academics
Students take one three-credit course per session with the option of adding an additional 1-credit Communicative Language course in Italian. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offering, such as an outing to Italy's most famous opera house, La Scala, cooking classes with local chefs and workshops with specialists in the field. Courses are taught by CIEE instructors. All CIEE faculty are familiar with the U.S. academic system and culture. Classes take place at CIEE Milan.

Dates & Fees
You get more for every dollar when you study abroad with CIEE, because our high-quality programs include everything from excursions to insurance. There are no hidden charges, and no disappointing surprises when you arrive.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.

CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel protection with benefits.
