Your CIEE Semester Intern and Study Abroad program in Florence lasts 12 weeks and features three key components: a part-time internship with an international organization (15-20 hours per week), an internship seminar, and two elective courses taught online through CIEE’s global academic partner, ASU. Enhance your experience with cultural and extracurricular activities while building career skills, expanding your professional network, and immersing yourself in Italian culture. Housing & Meals

Housing

CIEE Florence offers housing options to ensure you are comfortable in your home away from home. All housing options are located in neighborhoods with convenient access to public transportation, shops, cafés, and eateries.   

Standard Housing:  Includes a room in a shared apartment or homestay.

Shared Apartments: Includes a double room in a shared apartment located within 40 minutes of CIEE Florence. Apartments boast kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students. 
Homestays: A limited number of homestays may be available where students will reside with a Florentine family and live as a local. Homes are located within 40 minutes of CIEE Florence.

Select Housing: Includes a limited number of single rooms in shared apartments located within 40 minutes of CIEE Florence. Apartments boast kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students.  Select housing requires an additional fee.  

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

Meals

Shared Apartments: No meals are provided in apartments. Students have access to kitchen facilities to cook their own meals or can take advantage of the many neighborhood cafés and restaurants. 

Homestays: Two meals – generally breakfast and dinner – will be had at home with the host family. Students must arrange their own lunches.

CIEE Florence: Study in the lively square of Piazza Santo Spirito, located in Palazzo Guadagni near cafés, restaurants, and markets selling fresh vegetables and cheese. Set inside a Florentine Renaissance palace, CIEE Florence features two wings, beautiful classrooms, student lounges, a library, and a reception area.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by CIEE in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with optional online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar.

Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Requirements

All Florence Intern + Study Abroad students take the 6-credit part-time internship with the required embedded internship seminar plus two additional ASU online courses (ASU session A in spring, and ASU session B in fall) for a total of 12-14 semester credits.

Total credit: 12-14 U.S. semester/18-21 quarter credits

Course Credit

CIEE internship: 6 U.S. semester credits/9 quarter credits; 45 hours of in-person and asynchronous online learning activities, 225 - 300 internship placement hours.

ASU online courses: 3 - 4 U.S. semester/4.5 - 6 quarter credits; 45 - 60 contact hours

Academic Culture

CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The integrated academic course, which correlates with the internship, is taught in-person and asychronously. Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by CIEE and the host organization.

ASU Courses: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Students participate in a full-time in-person internship and required academic course featuring both in-person class sessions and online asynchronous work designed to help students develop professional and intercultural competencies to complement their internship experience.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of in-class and online engagement and preparation, and specific assessments such as project work, presentations, and examinations.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
