Your Destination

Home to a treasure trove of artistic and architectural jewels and a rich cultural heritage, Florence is considered the cradle of the Renaissance. The rich historic and artistic foundation makes Florence an exciting choice for study abroad students from all backgrounds. From its renowned art galleries and museums, such as the Uffizi Gallery, to its unrivaled architecture, like its impressive Duomo, Florence is a student-friendly city boasting endless opportunities to immerse oneself in the local language, food, and culture.

The perfect beauty of Florence, the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, unfolds over stunning rolling hills, timeless art and architecture by the likes of Michaelangelo, Brunelleschi, and Leonardo da Vinci.  Every region of Italy has its own culinary traditions and Tuscany is no exception, wine and olive oil make up much of the region’s economic backbone. All of this makes studying abroad in Florence nothing short of spectacular!

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Florence.

Academic Culture

Each course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated and the workload is demanding. CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of the city when classes are in session and plan trips for the weekends.

Class Format

Classes are open only to CIEE students and meet Monday through Friday.  Language classes are small, typically with up to 15 students per class, and emphasize communication and work in small groups. Content courses typically have no more than 20 students. CIEE courses combine lectures, readings, films, active participation and group discussion, class-related visits, and study trips. Additional activities may be scheduled in the afternoon. While extracurricular activities and personal travel contribute greatly to the students’ overall experience, attendance is mandatory for both classes and co-curricular events. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online with our learning management system, Canvas.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of attendance, participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.
