Exploring Sydney: 7 Must-Visit Spots for College Students
By: Priya Moran
Sydney, Australia, is an awesome city with no shortage of activities and attractions for college students to explore. From its iconic landmarks to hidden gems, Sydney has something for everyone. If you're a CIEE student living in Sydney, here are my eight must-visit spots that should be on your checklist:
1. Paddy's Market
Paddy's Market is a must-visit near the CIEE Sydney office in the heart of Sydney's bustling Chinatown. This market has basically anything you could think of or need. From cheap clothes, to souvenirs to cheap produce, this market is worth going to, even if you don’t plan on spending any money.
2. Mustard Seed Bookshop
This one is more random. However, if you like baked goods and/or orange juice, this tiny café is definitely worth tracking down. Right near Hyde Park, this bookshop is a fun place to stop on your way to see some of the typical must-sees.
3. Gertrude & Alice Café Bookstore
If you're a student looking for a cozy spot to study, read, or enjoy a cup of coffee, Gertrude & Alice Café Bookstore in Bondi Beach is the place to be. This quirky bookstore doubles as a café, offering a very peaceful environment where you can sip on your latte while surrounded by walls of books. It's a perfect spot for book lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat from the bustle of city life.
4. Blackheath General Store and Cafe
For a day trip away from the city, consider heading to the Blue Mountains and stopping by the Blackheath General Store and Cafe. This charming establishment combines a café with a unique boutique selling local art and artisanal goods. The serene mountain surroundings make it an ideal place to relax, explore, and enjoy the area's natural beauty.
5. Bondi Markets
Every Sunday, Bondi Beach comes alive with the Bondi Markets, a vibrant open-air market showcasing an array of eclectic stalls. From handmade jewelry and vintage clothing to gourmet food and art, you'll find whatever you’re looking for or just enjoy looking around. The market has great food and some REALLY good Nutella donuts.
6. Henley's Bar and Kitchen
Nestled in the picturesque Darling Harbour, Henley's Bar and Kitchen offers stunning waterfront views and a menu of delicious food and drinks. Whether you want a kangaroo steak, a salad, or a hot dog, this menu will likely have something worth ordering. The view is great and its not too far from a light rail from the CIEE office.

7. Barangaroo Reserve
For those seeking a peaceful escape that’s not really far from everything Sydney, Barangaroo Reserve is a must-visit. This recently developed waterfront park offers green spaces, walking paths, and amazing views of Sydney Harbour. It's an ideal spot for a picnic, a walk, or sitting by the water and watching the boats and lights of the harbor.
