Reflections on My Study Abroad Journey: From Sydney to Cape Town to Paris
By: Najmah Muhammad
Embarking on a study abroad journey is an experience like no other. It’s a whirlwind of exploration, self-discovery, and immersion into cultures far removed from what you’ve known. My journey took me across three continents, starting in Sydney, Australia, followed by Cape Town, South Africa, and finally Paris, France. Each destination left an indelible mark on me, shaping my worldview and deepening my appreciation for the beauty and diversity of our world.
Sydney, Australia
Sydney was the perfect starting point for my study abroad experience. The city is a stunning blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty. I quickly fell in love with its iconic beaches like Bondi and Manly, where I spent countless hours soaking up the sun and watching surfers ride the waves. But Sydney offered more than just beaches—its hiking trails were a gateway to Australia’s breathtaking landscapes.
One of my most memorable hikes was along the Blue Mountains, where the vistas of rugged cliffs and eucalyptus forests were nothing short of magical. The connection to nature that Sydney fosters is unparalleled, and it helped me find a sense of peace and grounding amidst the excitement of being in a new place. The city’s warm, laid-back people only added to the charm, making Sydney feel like a home away from home.
Cape Town, South Africa
From the beaches of Sydney, I transitioned to the vibrant culture of Cape Town. If Sydney was a lesson in nature’s tranquility, Cape Town was an education in resilience, history, and humanity. The city’s rich tapestry of cultures and its poignant history of apartheid offered lessons that extended far beyond the classroom.
During my time in Cape Town, I had the privilege of visiting Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and engaging in conversations with locals who generously shared their stories. I also had the chance to travel to Zambia and Zimbabwe, where I witnessed the majestic Victoria Falls, an awe-inspiring natural wonder that left me speechless. The people I met throughout these travels were warm and welcoming, teaching me the true meaning of Ubuntu: “I am because we are.”
Cape Town’s natural beauty was just as captivating as its culture. Whether I was hiking Table Mountain, strolling along the Cape of Good Hope, or relaxing on Clifton Beach, I found myself constantly in awe of the city’s landscapes. Cape Town’s vibrant energy and sense of community made it a place I will forever hold dear.
Paris, France:
My final destination was Paris, a city that had always lived in my dreams. Walking through the streets of Paris felt like stepping into a painting. The art and architecture were mesmerizing, from the grandeur of the Louvre and the charm of Montmartre to the iconic Eiffel Tower lighting up the night sky.
In Paris, I indulged in my love for art and history, spending hours exploring museums and marveling at masterpieces. The city’s architecture, with its intricate details and timeless elegance, left me spellbound. But Paris was also my launchpad for exploring other European gems. I traveled to Italy, where I savored the beauty of Florence and Rome; to the UK, where London’s blend of tradition and modernity fascinated me; and to Spain, where Barcelona’s vibrant energy and Gaudí’s surreal creations captured my imagination.
