We Made Empanadas!
Taught by a local chef who has his own empanada store, students got to practice making empanadas from scratch. We made humita (maíz/corn), carne al cuchillo (a type of beef), and caprese. Students prepared the dough, made the shapes, prepared the fillings, and stuffed and folded the empanadas. In addition to learning a new and typical skill, students also got to apply their Spanish knowledge!
The chef gave all the instructions in Spanish so participants had to use their language skills to follow the directions. The chef also gave the students some background history on empanadas. Empanada technically means “breaded” and empanadas were actually declared a Cultural Heritage of Food and Gastronomy by the Argentine Ministry of Culture. Students did an amazing job and the results were delicious!! We ate till we were full and had dozens of leftovers.
