Visiting Soweto and Mandela's House
Today was our second day in Johannesburg and we had the opportunity to visit Soweto and dive deeper into our understanding of Mandela's leadership and South Africa's history. Soweto is the largest township in South Africa. It is the only place in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winners lived on the same street! Both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu resided there during their lifetime. We toured Nelson Mandela's home in Soweto, where he lived with his family before he was imprisoned. Here him and his family were subjected to harassment and terrorized by the government. We were able to see the gunshot holes still in the brick. We also were able to visit the Hector Pieterson musuem and even see where the Soweto Uprising took place, really connecting how their struggle fueled their leadership. We are excited to continue to dive deeper in Madela's example of leadership!
