Triana Tile Workshop
For one of our final cultural activities, we crossed the bridge to Triana, a neighborhood well-known in Sevilla and beyond for its azulejos, painted ceramic tiles. There, we visited one of the traditional workshops that line the streets and our host, Beatriz, explained the history of Triana and the workshop, which has belonged to her husband´s family for three generations.
Inside the studio, the walls were lined with painted tiles, clay sculptures and partially-finished murals and custom orders. Each of the students were given their own tile to paint and Beatriz explained the process and significance of the azulejos. The students used traditional designs and techniques that mirror those they may have seen around Sevilla, such as the ornate painted tiles that cover the Plaza de España or decorate the outside of many buildings.
