Oh Toulouse Oh Toulouse
“Oh my country, oh Toulouse, oh Toulouse”
— This is the name of the song from the famous singer, Claude Nougaro, that every citizen of Toulouse knows and sings.
On Saturday, the four program leaders met the Aeronautical Engineering students at the Dulles airport for the Chaperoned flight to Toulouse via Frankfort. Everyone was excited and already started to make friends by the time we landed in “The Pink City!”
Despite the jet lag, the students adjusted beautifully to the time difference with a picnic at a local park, a small orientation, dinner and had a welcomed early bedtime.
Monday, we took the morning tram to Institut Catholique de Toulouse. After a morning orientation we got a two hour tour of the downtown area. We saw the “pink” bricks the town is nick-named after, a statue of Nougaro, the Garonne river, the Basilica of Saint-Sernin and Place du Capitole. We ate dinner at the hotel and had an activity.
Tuesday, after our first Aviation class the students learned to order their lunch in French. We had a wonderful, sunny afternoon canoeing on the Garonne River with plans to eat at the Les Halles de Cartoucherie (which everyone mispronounces as Charcuterie) - Ha Ha!
