Museums Galore: Learning about the history of Mérida
Last week the Language and Culture students were as busy as ever. Their theme for the week was creativity, and every day students were exposed to a new type of art and ways to let their creativity shine. Two of our Cultural Activities this week were to two museums around Mérida where students got their much-needed dose of Mexican culture: Museo de la Ciudad de Mérida and the Palacio de la Música.
On Tuesday, students explored art at the Museo de la Ciudad de Mérida. This museum is home to many artifacts and archeological pieces of historical relevance to the city's development, from pre-Hispanic to contemporary times. The students had to pick their favorite piece of art [painting or artifact], take a photo of it, and share it with their Spanish class. The students enjoyed seeing the variety of art pieces; there was something to cater to every student's art style.
On Thursday, students learned about Mexican music's history at the Palacio de la Música. We had a guided tour of the museum, where students learned about radio, TV, movies, and music from over one hundred years ago to contemporary times. There was something for everyone. All students learned something new about different media types!
