After each class, students have an opportunity to use what they have learned in community conversations or as we like to refer to them: Misión Ñ! Many of these conversations revolve around asking locals for directions or suggestions on activities to do in the city. Before their first experience, many of them were very shy and nervous about speaking to native speakers. By now, many of them have conquered their fear and have gained more confidence in their Spanish speaking abilities.

To start the week off, several groups went to “tapear” for their Misión Ñ. Spain is known for having great tapas like tortilla de patata, croquetas, jamón, etc. Therefore, it was an important experience for the students to practice ordering a tapa of their choice. In keeping with Spanish tradition, different tapas were ordered and shared among the group members!

Today, one group of students did their Misión Ñ in la Plaza de Colón right after visiting the National Archeological Museum. They were practicing getting directions to popular places in Madrid like el Parque del Buen Retiro, Plaza de España, and la Gran Vía. After they had spoken with several different people, they came back together as a group to talk about the conversations they had. While still huddled together, a woman stopped to ask for directions to Zara, a typical Spanish clothing store. Without any hesitation, Tess Durrel stepped up and explained how to get there in Spanish! Everyone in the group was impressed and so proud of her!
