Hôtel Pasteur: An eclectic social project
This week's theme deals with neighborhoods, community, and social change. Today's visit to Hotel Pasteur was perfectly aligned to fit this theme.
Students quickly discovered that Hotel Pasteur is not a hotel at all. This beautiful building in the heart of the city used to be owned by the university, but has since been converted into a neighborhood community center.
The concept is one that is not common in the U.S: Part Maker Space, part town hall, part hostel. Hotel Pasteur is a space that is for everyone. The cost to use the space starts at as little as 50 centimes (half a euro).
After a short explanation and Q & A, Navigators were free to explore the space and interact with the people working there. Some chose to make music, others put together a puzzle or tried out the treadmill. The garden was a popular spot and students also enjoyed seeing art on the walls and talking with the artists.
After the activity we debriefed and discussed similar concepts in our communities.
