Friday Night Fun
On Friday our students relished some well-deserved free time after their language classes. Many spent the afternoon in the center of the city and some relaxed at home after a very busy week of classes, cultural activities, and exploration. At 8:00 PM we reconvened in the main square, which was abuzz with people. We were able to enjoy a video mapping show, which was projected onto the facade of the Cathedral of San Ildefonso, the oldest cathedral in the Americas. The Spaniards used the stones of the principal pyramid of the Mayan city, T’ho, to construct their Catholic Cathedral; the title of the video mapping production is ‘Sacred Stones’. We learned several details of how this emblematic building was raised and were impressed with the unique show while we relished the beautiful evening with our friends as our second week in Mérida came to an end.
