Mediterranean Marine Ecosystems & Sustainability

The past two days have been busy with learning about local marine life and discovering our new home. On Wednesday, students attended Biology and Spanish classes and had time to collaborate on their group projects. We also participated in Bystander Intervention training to learn ways to help and support our classmates in potentially dangerous situations. Students demonstrated maturity and compassion as they role-played different scenarios, and how to keep each other safe. We ended the day with a scavenger hunt around Palma, where students had to find program leaders and staff in different locations around the city center. Many of our students agree that best way to end the day is with gelato!

On Thursday, we visited Aula de la Mar (Classroom of the Sea) to do some fieldwork. Because of the economic exploitation of the coast through fishing and tourism, it is very important to learn about the marine environment. The sea is one of the most important elements of the environment in the Balearic Islands. Students developed their observation and interpretation skills while committing to preserve our seas and oceans. Our global navigators aim to make a positive impact on the future of our planet through awareness and preservation.

After our lunch break, we hopped on the bus and headed to Es Carnatge for a walk through a nature preserve with our science instructor, Bea. This is a coastal area of geological interest in which remains of Posidonia oceanica are deposited. Posidonia forms extensive meadows and they are highly productive ecosystems with a large number of micro-habitats where a great diversity of species live.

Next we arrived at Can Pastilla Beach, and we cooled off with popsicles and a dip in the ocean! Our global navigators are now busy packing for our weekend camping trip. Everyone is so excited for some awesome water sports and boating. Stay tuned for updates on our beautiful hike to Coll Baix!
