Bunker Museum Tour
In 1942, when Hilter realized the war was coming to Germany, the Anhalter Bunker was built in the middle of Berlin. Holding 12,000 people shoulder-to-shoulder at one point in time, it's 2.5 meters thick concrete walls protected civilians from the bombs falling onto Berlin. Today, this bunker is the site of a museum called "Wie konnte es geschehen?" ("How could it happen?"). The museum gives the chronological events and historical context surrounding the Holocaust. From World War I, to the Weimer Republic, to the election of Adolf Hitler, to the first concentration camps and to World War II and its end, students were able to learn first-hand about how such atrocities could happen.
Students were able to move at their own pace, soaking up the history and the devastation. On Thursday, we prepare to visit Sachsenhausen, a concentration camp located outside Berlin. It is important that students have the proper background knowledge before such a poignant and difficult experience.
