Your Destination

Edinburgh’s beauty is both staggering and inimitable. But the city is far more than just a pretty face. Take a closer look and there’s much more to discover. The capital city of Scotland and home to the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh is modest in size with a population of 0.5 million people, but boasts a large and diverse student population.

Edinburgh was the center of the Enlightenment in the 18th century and was nicknamed “The Athens of the North.” Then, the city was a world leader in medical science, philosophy, and literature. Today, Edinburgh is a European center for financial services and biotech, and its universities are world leaders in fields as diverse as FinTech, AI, Celtic Studies, architecture, and biomedical and environmental sciences. The city is also a cultural hub, and home to the largest arts festival in the World, the Edinburgh International Arts Festival, which takes place in August every year. And, whether you’re looking to be entertained with live music in a traditional pub or be awe-struck by a show packed with drama, when it comes to entertainment the options are endless.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Edinburgh.

Academic Culture

Each course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated and the workload is demanding. CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lectures and discussions with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of the city when classes are in session and plan trips for the weekends.

Class Format

Classes are open only to CIEE students and meet Monday through Friday. CIEE courses combine lectures, readings, films, active participation and group discussion, class-related visits, and study trips. Additional activities may be scheduled in the afternoon. While extracurricular activities and personal travel contribute greatly to the students’ overall experience, attendance is mandatory for both classes and required co-curricular events. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online with our learning management system, Canvas.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of attendance, participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.
