Your Destination

Located just an hour and a half west of Paris by train and an hour from the sea, Rennes is known for technology and dynamic economy. The city is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in France and provides study abroad students the opportunity to learn the distinct Celtic traditions particular to this region of France. Half-timbered medieval houses in the historic center contribute to the city’s esthetic charms and contrast with more recent and modern urban architecture.

Rennes’ 60,000-strong student population gives the city a young feel, with a rich variety of cultural events. Despite its small size, Rennes has everything a big city would offer and MORE: arts, food, sports, festivals, concerts, shopping, urban life, country life, and nature.

What students like about Rennes is its human scale: the city is not too big, not too small, safe, and accessible thanks to its excellent bus and metro transport system. After a couple days in Rennes, students can navigate the city very easily and within just a few weeks, they can develop new routines and seek their soon-to-be favorite crêperies, bakeries, cafés, and boutiques! The city is well connected thanks to its conveniently located small international airport, with destinations to Amsterdam, Barcelona Berlin, Lisbon, London, Prague, and Rome – and European train station.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Rennes.

Academic Culture

Host institution courses tend to be lecture-based, and students are expected to work more independently than in the U.S. Great importance is placed on oral presentations and written essays, so strong (English or French) language speaking and writing skills are important. Professors expect students to determine their own study and reading schedules. Similar to classes at U.S. institutions, students should expect to spend an average of two hours of preparation and study for each hour in their classes.  Classes are often more formal and consist of lectures with less class participation.

CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class schedule typically features a combination of traditional lectures and discussions with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student engagement.

To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Rennes when classes are in session and plan trips for the long weekends.

Class Format

CIEE courses are typically for CIEE students only. Host Institution classes include both local and international students. Classes at both CIEE and ICR will span from Monday to Friday and meet 1-2 times per week for anywhere from 1-3 hours per session, depending on the course.

Grading

For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, midterms, and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. Host Institution professors use a French grading scale of 0–20, with 10 considered a minimal passing grade. Assessment is typically based on essays, tests, oral presentations, out-of-class project reports, participation, midterms, and final exams. Students should expect two major exams per term. The final exam may count for up to 50 percent of the final grade. CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F.
