Your Destination

Copenhagen has considerably transformed in the past decade and emerged as a "must-stop" destination in Europe. Despite playing host to more than 600,000 residents, Copenhagen retains an old-world, small village feel – with more bicycles than cars traveling its streets. In Europe's safest capital city, students discover an endless array of cultural activities, history, architecture, and more.

For students passionate about sustainability, social innovation, and progressive societies, Copenhagen is the ultimate study abroad destination. The city serves as a living laboratory for green urban planning, cutting-edge social policies, and democratic engagement. Its dynamic community prioritizes environmental stewardship, social equity, and participatory governance, creating unmatched opportunities for hands-on learning and real-world inspiration.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Copenhagen.

Directed Independent Research

For-credit Directed Independent Research is for qualified students who have demonstrated academic rigor and curiosity towards a particular research topic. Independent research topics will be approved by the CIEE Copenhagen Academic Director and home institutions and must reflect a topic that is relevant to local expertise. To be accepted into this course, students must submit a structured proposal with a topic of exploration, significance of research topic as it relates to local expertise, methodology, a literature review, and a schedule of research milestones. Upon research completion, students will present their findings to a panel of academics. An example of a recent project is, “The Unsustainable Green and the Looming Nuclear Age: An Analysis of the Misrepresentation of Biomass and Nuclear Energy in Danish and International Environmental Policy and its Impact on Europe’s Energy Transition.”

Academics

Academics

The Semester in Copenhagen program offers a well-rounded academic structure that balances rigorous coursework with experiential learning. Students enroll in 4-5 courses per semester, earning a total of 12-16 U.S. semester credits. The curriculum includes CIEE courses and the option to take up to two ASU online courses – up to 8 credit hours. This academic flexibility allows students to customize their learning experience based on their interests and career goals.

Courses span a wide array of disciplines, including business, communication, literature, social sciences, philosophy, humanities, environmental sciences, and international studies. A unique feature of the program is the opportunity to participate in Directed Independent Research, enabling students to pursue in-depth study on topics aligned with local expertise. These research projects culminate in presentations to academic panels, reflecting the program's emphasis on both intellectual rigor and practical application.

The academic environment encourages active student participation through a blend of lectures, discussions, and co-curricular activities. Classes are held Monday through Thursday and often incorporate co-curricular activities and excursions to enhance academic and cultural understanding. All courses are conducted in English, but students can deepen their cultural immersion through the optional "Survival Danish" course, which provides basic language and cultural insights to enrich their time in Copenhagen.

Academic Culture

CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation, so attendance is mandatory.

The academic environment at CIEE Copenhagen offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture. CIEE courses typically take place from Monday to Thursday, running from and from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., providing ample time for both intensive study and exploration.

Canvas is the primary digital tool used to manage learning outside of the classroom and communications with the instructor.

Class Format

CIEE courses are designed to emphasize Danish perspectives, offering both academic rigor and engaging, student-centered learning activities. With small class sizes, you'll have plenty of opportunities to interact with your instructor. Classes meet 2-4 times per week for 1-3 hours, and attendance is mandatory for both classes and co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported by CIEE's online learning management system, Canvas.

ASU online courses are 7.5 weeks long, with all work due within the session dates, regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end. You’ll need a standard PC or Mac with a download speed above 25 Mbps, email, and productivity software like Microsoft Office. Courses are primarily asynchronous, allowing you to work at your own pace within assignment deadlines set by your instructor. While a recommended pace is provided, you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses alongside your CIEE courses.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. Attendance is compulsory in CIEE classes.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any CIEE student. ASU awards grades of "A+," "A," "A-," "B+," " B," "B-," "C+," "C," "D," or "E.” “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students. Please see the CIEE Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades
