Your Destination

The streets and avenues of Buenos Aires and its 48 distinct neighborhoods offer cultural outings, varied gastronomy, lively nightlife, and beautiful parks and green spaces. Buenos Aires is brimming with art, culture, architecture, and style.

As an international student, you will embark on your daily routines commuting by an efficient metro system and bus system. College campuses at partner universities offer an array of activities and opportunities to students, as well as courses in English, which allow you to pursue your required credits without the hardships of a language barrier. At lunchtime, the college cafeterias will surprise you with healthy, hearty, homemade food, and an opportunity to catch up with new friends.

Afternoons are often spent exploring Buenos Aires´ cultural attractions, such as museums and art galleries, with friends or CIEE peers in customized cultural outings. Evenings in Buenos Aires begin with the tantalizing aromas of fresh-baked bread and merienda time with friends and family, to later enjoying gatherings in parks, cafés, or theaters to socialize and appreciate the city's rich cultural offerings, from live music performances to theater productions.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with marginalized identities might encounter in Buenos Aires.

Professional Development

For-credit Directed Independent Research is for qualified students who have demonstrated academic rigor and curiosity toward a particular research topic. Independent research topics will be approved by CIEE Buenos Aires academic staff and the home institution and must reflect a topic that is relevant to Argentina. To be accepted into this course, students must submit a structured proposal with topic of exploration, significance of research topic as it relates to Argentina, methodology, a literature review, and a schedule of research milestones. Upon research completion, students will present their findings to a panel of academics.

A for-credit part-time internship allows students the opportunity to have practical work experience in a company within Engineering, Technology, or Science sectors. While having a basic level of Spanish is beneficial, it is not required. In addition to the on-site experience, students participating in an internship program have a weekly classroom component, which provides academic support to their practical experience.

Academic Culture

The academic environment at CIEE Buenos Aires offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen their understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture.

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday, providing students with a schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in Buenos Aires.

In addition to lectures, CIEE courses often incorporate local field trips and co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of Buenos Aires and its surroundings. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context.

Attendance is mandatory in CIEE courses, with absences impacting final grades. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits.

UTDT prides itself on offering a more intimate educational setting, with small class sizes allowing for greater interaction between students and professors in a more participatory style of learning, with discussions and debates being a core component of many courses.

Overall, the academic environment at CIEE Buenos Aires offers a comprehensive and immersive educational experience, combining rigorous coursework with experiential learning opportunities to enrich students' academic and cultural understanding.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

Courses taught at the CIEE Buenos Aires study center are for CIEE students only. Host Institution classes include both local and international students. A typical class schedule includes a combination of both CIEE and Host Institution-administered classes and will span from Monday to Friday. Classes at both CIEE and the host institution meet 2-4 times per week, for anywhere from 1-3 hours per class session, depending on the course. Attendance in CIEE classes is strictly enforced, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported and augmented online by CIEE’s learning management system, Canvas.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end. You’ll need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you’re given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your CIEE location.

Grading

CIEE courses use the U.S. A-F grading scale. Students’ grades are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

Courses at UTDT are graded numerically on a scale of 1-10, which CIEE converts to recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents. Most classes have written exams and occasionally a final oral exam, based on an extensive reading list and formal class lectures.

ASU grading As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any CIEE student. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” grading options are not allowed for CIEE students. Please see the CIEE Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.
