Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer at a local nonprofit or non-governmental organization involved in social policy, human rights, community service, and public health matters, among others. HOUSING

CIEE Buenos Aires offers diverse housing options to ensure you're comfortable in your home away from home. From homestays to shared apartments, we will strive for your accommodation preferences to be met. Additionally, all housing options are located in neighborhoods with convenient access to public transportation, shops, cafés, and eateries.

Standard Housing: Includes a single room at a homestay, a double room at a shared apartment, or a double room at a student residency located within a 60-minute commute from CIEE Buenos Aires.

Homestays: Experience real, day-to-day life in Buenos Aires by living with a typical Argentine host, such as families with young children, single professionals, young couples with no children, and older couples whose children visit but do not live at home. Homestays feature a kitchen, living room, and bathroom shared with the host. 
Apartments and residence halls: Include kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students.

Select Housing: Includes a single room in a shared apartment or single accommodation in a studio apartment located within 45 minutes from CIEE Buenos Aires. Apartments boast kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students. Select housing requires an additional fee.

Select Plus Housing: Includes a single room in a shared apartment or single accommodation in a studio apartment located within 30 minutes from CIEE Buenos Aires. Apartments boast kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students. Select plus housing requires an additional fee.  

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

MEALS

Homestays: Homestays include two meals per day – breakfast and either lunch or dinner. Host families and students arrange their own meal schedules. Students are responsible for the remaining meal, either preparing it at home or eating in one of the many restaurants and cafés throughout the city.

Academics

This intensive eight-week program is dedicated to Spanish language acquisition through classroom instruction combined with cultural and community activities. Students take three Spanish language courses, focused on grammar and syntax, oral communication, conversation, and reading and writing. Students are placed in the appropriate level depending on the results of an online placement test and an onsite oral interview administered during orientation. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offering.

Spanish courses to be delivered are contingent upon enrollment numbers and the proficiency level of the students. Please approve all Spanish courses with your advisors before arrival.

CIEE Buenos Aires is in one of the most vibrant and student populated neighborhoods of the city and offers easy access to some of the city’s nicest parks, restaurants, cafés, and shops.

Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

All students must take the three required Spanish courses at the appropriate level including:

Academic Culture

The pace of this intensive program is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. CIEE courses follow U.S. academic culture and standards.  The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular activities.  Special focus is paid to experiential learning and outside-classroom activities to best develop Spanish language proficiency. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation.  Teaching methods will be familiar to U.S. students who have studied foreign language. Instructors are experienced in second language instruction, and there are staff and resources to help students navigate academic cultural differences.

Class Format

Courses are taught in Spanish by CIEE Spanish department faculty at CIEE Buenos Aires and are for CIEE students only. Classes are scheduled Monday through Friday.  Attendance is strictly enforced for all classes and required co-curricular activities. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class.  Instruction is supported and augmented online by the Canvas Learning Management System.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students’ grades are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and exams.  Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses.
