Life-Changing Semester in Rome

Studying abroad in Rome with CIEE is more than just an adventure—it’s a transformative experience that pushes you to grow in ways you never imagined. From the moment you get there you are met with the lovely staff ready to help you adapt to a new life chapter. Living in a new country teaches you to be independent in the best possible way. From figuring out public transportation to navigating everyday life in a foreign language, you become more resourceful, confident, and self-reliant. Each challenge becomes a lesson, and before you know it, you’re thriving in a place that once felt so unfamiliar.

Rome’s culture is encapsulating —it surrounds you and invites you to embrace it fully. You learn to appreciate the Italian way of life, where connection, tradition, and savoring the moment take center stage. Sitting at a café, sipping a cappuccino, and watching the world go by isn’t just a pastime—it’s a way to reconnect with yourself and new friends. It’s in these moments that you truly start to understand the beauty of slowing down and being present.

Cultural appreciation goes beyond the surface. As you explore Rome’s iconic landmarks and hidden corners, you come to see history not just as something in the past but as an ongoing story that shapes the city and its people. Along with understanding Rome’s culture you are bound to understand more culture while traveling. This has also been one of the most impactful things during my study abroad. I was able to experience so many different places that I might not ever be able to again. CIEE makes the balance of school and experiences a top priority and there are so many resources to use in order to make the most of your time. 

Through all of this, I have grown into a more independent and grown to love doing things for me. I have learned to see the world from a different perspective, appreciating the richness of cultures other than your own. Rome teaches you to embrace differences, celebrate traditions, and find common ground. It’s a journey of self-discovery and cultural appreciation that will forever change how you see yourself and the world.
