I’ve Never Been So Happy – Studying Abroad With CIEE

There’s something incredibly empowering about being on your own in a completely unfamiliar place. It forces you to grow in ways that staying in your comfort zone never could.

Every day abroad is a lesson in self-reliance. You figure out how to navigate new streets, adapt to different routines, and eventually feel at home in a foreign city. Whether it’s cooking your own meals, planning a weekend trip, or simply figuring out public transportation, you take on responsibilities that leave you feeling more capable and confident than ever.

For me, budgeting became a whole new challenge—and honestly, I crushed it. Balancing currency exchanges, travel costs, and justifying a splurge at Bershka or Zara turned me into a pro at managing my money. And while some of these challenges may seem intimidating at first, you have to remember—you’re never truly alone. Through CIEE, you’re placed in an apartment with “strangers,” but by the end of the first month, you’ll feel like you’ve known each other forever.

Immersing Yourself in a New Culture

Living in another country isn’t just about seeing the sights—it’s about truly becoming part of a different way of life.

Even if you don’t become fluent, immersing yourself in a new language opens doors to deeper conversations and richer experiences. For example, going into the grocery store and being able to communicate in Italian is so rewarding—it’s the moment you stop feeling like a tourist and start feeling like you belong.

Every country has its own rhythm, and adapting to it teaches you patience, flexibility, and an appreciation for the little things. Personally, I’ve learned to slow down and really savor my days. I start my mornings with a cappuccino, take a siesta after class, and stroll through the city instead of rushing from place to place.

And let’s not forget the food. Oh my gosh—the food. Every meal tells you something about the culture, and trying it firsthand makes it so much more meaningful when you recreate it back home. Plus, my cooking repertoire has expanded in ways I never expected.

The Thrill of Travel

Of course, one of the most exciting parts of studying abroad is the travel.

Since August, I’ve explored Ponza, Amalfi, Florence, London, Croatia, Barcelona, Madrid, and Marrakesh. Each destination was less than a three-hour plane ride away, with unbelievably cheap flights.

What made these trips even better were the people I traveled with. The friends you make while studying abroad are unlike any other—you share adventures, laugh through travel mishaps, and create memories you’ll talk about for years.

At the same time, I made sure to spend plenty of weekends in Rome. Staying in one place allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture—getting to know the neighborhoods, traditions, and people in a way that quick trips just can’t offer.
