Emerson Eller da Silva: "Berlin has stolen my heart!":
"Berlin has stolen my heart!" – These words from Emerson Eller da Silva perfectly capture the magic of studying abroad in Germany’s vibrant capital.
The first program of 2025 at CIEE Berlin, January in Berlin, brought together students from diverse majors for an immersive three-week experience. Through dynamic courses, eye-opening excursions, and deep dives into Berlin’s rich history and innovative future, students gained far more than just classroom knowledge—they lived and breathed the city.
Emerson, a participant in this year’s program, shares his journey of discovery, learning, and inspiration in Berlin.

- Can you introduce yourself?
My full name is Emerson Eller da Silva, I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and have lived in Midtown Manhattan, New York for about 2 decades. I study at Borough of Manhattan Community College.
- How did you find out about the January in Berlin Program and why did you apply?
I found out about January in Berlin probably on a flyer on campus at BMCC. I was so excited about it because I had just changed my major to Entrepreneurship.
- Could you tell me more about your experience in Berlin so far?
Both the course and Berlin have been a blessing! Berlin is a fascinating city, quite similar to my home, New York, with so much to explore culturally, a vibrant population of friendly and well-educated people. CIEE provides with great excursions and opportunities to get engaged with the city and its amazing offerings.
- What has been the best moment/experience?
Making new friends in an environment where studying the subject we love is fun, productive, inspiring.
Can you tell us more about the program itself?
The "Entrepreneurship and Startup Culture" course at CIEE introduces us students to the dynamic world of startups, covering key topics like business planning, innovation, startup ecosystems, and ethical considerations. It aims to develop entrepreneurial skills and often includes practical experiences, such as internships or projects, to provide real-world insights into startup culture.
- How has the experience to study and live in other country/culture been and which would be the main challenges/ opportunities?
Berlin doesn't really present much of a challenge to us from the United States, as most Germans here actually speak English. The opportunities are great, in terms of career, opening a business–at least 2 of us have expressed the desire of living here for a while.
- What would you tell a student that is thinking on studying abroad, some advice?
Come to Berlin! CIEE has a lovely, dedicated staff, always ready to support us students in various ways, and literally there is no other city in Europe as great as Berlin; I beg your pardon, London and Paris are incredible places, however, Berlin has stolen my heart!
