Coffeecompany - The Way Better “Starbucks” of the Netherlands
By: Mia Ferrentino
Coffeecompany is a chain cafe I have grown to love throughout my time in Amsterdam. They have locations everywhere in Amsterdam and in other Dutch cities as well. It has good coffee, cute decor, and comfy workspaces. The walls are covered in Dutch posters. There are couches, long tables, small tables, and comfy chairs. As the Dutch would say, it has a great vibe.
While it is a chain, which some people don’t like, it is reliable and still has a quaint study atmosphere. It is also much smaller than a chain such as Starbucks especially considering its cafes are only in the Netherlands. The company is smaller just like the Netherlands as a country. It offers free WIFI, good food, and varied seating options. The staff is always very friendly and makes the drinks quickly. Plus, it is cheap compared to other local cafes. My usual order is a chai with almond milk or a dirty chai if I need the extra energy.
There is one just down the street from my housing, and in fact, I am sitting in it right now as I write this. I know I can always come here to get work done, read, or apply for jobs as post-grad is fast approaching. Moving across the world can be very intimidating, but having great housing, a good school, and finding a cafe I love has helped bring stability and routine to my life.
It’s very important while you are abroad to find places that make you feel comfortable and at home - places that are consistent, and you know you can go to get work done or relax or enjoy some good coffee and food. Finding these places, along with people to enjoy them with is what makes you feel like a local in your new home for the semester. No matter where you end up abroad, I hope you find those places that make you feel at home and if you end up in the Netherlands be sure to check out Coffeecompany!
