Embracing Sustainable Travel
By: Mya Cummins
When I decided to study abroad in Amsterdam with CIEE, I knew I’d be stepping into a city famous for its canals, art, and rich history. What I didn’t fully realize was just how committed Amsterdam is to sustainability. From biking everywhere to exploring green spaces and enjoying eco-friendly dining, my time here has not only been about learning in the classroom but also about living more consciously.
Biking Like a Local
One of the first things I had to adjust to was Amsterdam’s bike culture. I’ll admit, biking in such a bustling city was intimidating at first. But thanks to CIEE, I got my hands on a rented bike right away, and within days, I felt like a local. Being able to bike anywhere at any time is an incredibly liberating feeling that is the perfect thing to capitalize on abroad. Not to sound too dramatic, but it isn’t just a way to get around here—it’s a lifestyle. Seriously, it is quite challenging building biking home from class in the rain, pray for the health of your computer Birkenstocks. Whether I was heading to class, running errands, or just exploring the city’s cobblestone streets, my bike became my best friend.
What I loved most was knowing how much biking reduces my carbon footprint. It felt good to contribute to Amsterdam’s eco-friendly ethos while also getting a great workout. For longer trips, I relied on the city’s impressive public transportation system, which runs on renewable energy. Having a student OV-chipkaart made traveling by tram, train, or bus easy and affordable. It was wild for me to learn that The average Dutch carbon footprint is 7 tons annually while the average American’s is 16!
Finding Peace in Amsterdam’s Green Spaces
Amid the hustle and bustle of the city, Amsterdam’s green spaces became a great little get away. My favorite spot was Vondelpark, a sprawling park with plenty of room to bike, read, play frisbee, or just people-watch.
Another highlight was Westerpark, which close to much of the student housing. Exploring its fabric lumiere museum, eating at the cafes and brewers throughout the park, and running on the trails made me feel connected to nature in a way that’s rare for city living. I loved how Amsterdam integrates these spaces so seamlessly into urban life—it’s a perfect example of how cities can prioritize green living.
Sustainable Eats
One of my favorite parts of living in Amsterdam was exploring its food scene, especially places that focus on sustainability. I discovered De Kas, a farm-to-table restaurant housed in a greenhouse. Eating there was like tasting the season itself, with fresh, organic ingredients grown right on-site.
For more casual meals, I often visited local farmers’ markets or shopped at Marqt, a grocery store specializing in sustainable and ethical products. Cooking with friends in our student housing became a fun (and budget-friendly) way to try out fresh, local ingredients. It felt great knowing that my choices supported local farmers and reduced food waste.
Lessons in Sustainability
One thing I appreciated about CIEE Amsterdam was how they wove sustainability into our program. Practices and discussions about climate change and eco-tourism made me more mindful of my impact. Recycling, reducing waste, and supporting local businesses became part of my routine here—and habits I hope to carry back home.
Studying abroad in Amsterdam has been more than just an academic journey. Living sustainably here has taught me how small choices—like biking instead of driving, eating locally, or spending time in nature—can make a big difference. If you’re considering studying abroad and want to live in a city that embraces eco-friendly living, Amsterdam is the perfect place. It’s not just a beautiful city; it’s a city that inspires you to live better.
