METRO LINES TO NAVIGATE THE CITY!
Your Destination
Madrid's influence in politics, education, science, entertainment, media, fashion, and art makes it an important international metropolis and a primary hub in southern Europe. Spain's capital city is full of exciting events, including the annual Pride celebration, World Tapas Day, art festivals like PhotoEspaña exhibit, and offers access to world-renowned art museums, soccer matches, and more. Only steps away from the historic Puerta del Sol, CIEE Madrid is in the heart of Madrid's downtown area, and all the city's vibrant culture has to offer.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while interning abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Madrid.
The Culture
Excursions & Activities
- Visit the world heritage site of El Escorial – the largest Renaissance palace and monastery in the world – built under the “Golden Age” reign of King Philip II of Spain in the 1500s; located in the northern mountains, El Escorial gives visitors a view of daily life in the royal court and its impressive architecture, where decisions were made at the height of the Spanish Empire (students also have an opportunity to explore the neighboring 18th-century village of San Lorenzo)
- Visit UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the medieval city of Alcalá de Henares, or hike the trails in the Guadarrama Mountains, on a CIEE-organized day trip
- Discover the flavors of Spain while trying out some typical tapas, such as croquetas, Spanish egg tortilla, and spicy potatoes
- Soak up Spanish culture with museum visits or popular neighborhood visits to Lavapiés, Malasaña, or La Latina
- Savor downtime with other students while you play basketball, frisbee, hike, swim, or catch a theater, dance, or music performance in some of the local parks, such as El Retiro

Housing & Meals
Housing
CIEE Madrid offers diverse housing options to maximize your study abroad experience, including student residence halls, or shared apartments in several city districts. All housing options are located near supermarkets, restaurants, gyms, and public transportation and provide the convenience of urban living in one of Europe’s largest cosmopolitan cities.
Student housing in Madrid typically looks different than what you may be used to in the U.S. Unlike most college campuses, CIEE does not own or manage student housing in Madrid. We work within local housing networks to carefully identify housing partners, vendors, and homestay hosts that offer students a culturally active living experience.
All Madrid housing sizes, room designs, and amenities vary and have their own distinct features. Living in Madrid may mean downsizing for the duration of your stay, as student housing space and locations are at a premium (for example, living space, kitchen, washing machines, or bedroom size may be smaller than what you’re used to at home). In the summer, CIEE only guarantees that each room has a fan, and only a select few accommodations may have centrally controlled air conditioning.
Standard Housing: Includes a double room in a shared apartment or student dorm located within a 70-minute commute of the Madrid city center. Meals are not included in the dorms or apartments.
- Shared Apartments: Shared apartments are modest in size and feature a few amenities like basic furniture, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi access, a room fan, maintenance repair services, bed linens, towels, and a kitchen.
- Student Dorms: Student dorms are modern, offer Wi-Fi access, and typically house students in single or shared bedrooms with an individual or shared kitchen. Dorm locations may vary.
Select Housing Plus: Includes a guaranteed single room at a shared apartment or student dorm residence hall located within a 30-minute commute of Madrid city center. Meals are not included in the dorms or apartments. Select Plus housing requires an additional fee.
- Shared Apartments: Shared apartments are modest in size and feature a few amenities like basic furniture, a laundry machine, Wi-Fi access, a room fan, maintenance repair services, bed linens, towels, and a kitchen.
- Student Dorms: Student Dorms are modern, offer Wi-Fi access, and typically house students in single or shared bedrooms with an individual or shared kitchen. Dorm locations may vary.
A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Please note that you may be placed in housing where you will share common spaces with other CIEE students who opted for a different housing category.
Meals
Residence Halls/Shared Apartments: Meals are not included. Residence halls and apartments have direct access to supermarkets, restaurants, public transport, and independent dining halls.
Transportation
Commute time from your housing location to your internship will vary depending on the location of the internship provider.
