Your CIEE Semester Intern and Study Abroad program in Barcelona lasts 12 weeks and features three key components: A part-time internship with an international organization (approximately 20 hours per week), an internship seminar, and two elective courses taught online through CIEE’s global academic partner, ASU. Enhance your experience with cultural and extracurricular activities while building career skills, expanding your professional network, and immersing yourself in Spanish culture. Housing

CIEE Barcelona offers diverse housing options to ensure you’re comfortable in your home away from home. From homestays to shared apartments, we strive for your accommodation preferences to be met. Additionally, all housing options are located in neighborhoods with convenient access to public transportation, shops, cafés, and eateries.

Standard Housing: Includes a single room at a homestay or a single room at a residence hall located within 50 minutes of CIEE Barcelona. Homestays feature a kitchen, living room, and bathroom shared with a host family. Dorms boast shared kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students.

Select Housing: Includes a double room in a shared apartment located within 30 minutes of CIEE Barcelona. Apartments boast shared kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students. Select housing requires an additional fee.

Select Plus Housing: Includes a single room in a residence hall located within 30 minutes of CIEE Barcelona. Residence halls boast shared kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students. Select Plus housing requires an additional fee.

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

Meals

Homestays: Students have breakfast and dinner with their host families, and they are responsible for lunch. Students do not typically have access to the kitchen at the host family home.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by CIEE in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with optional online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar.

Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Requirements

All Barcelona Intern + Study Abroad students take the 6-credit part-time internship with the required embedded internship seminar plus two additional ASU online courses (ASU session A in spring, and ASU session B in fall) for a total of 12-14 semester credits.

CIEE internship: 6 U.S. semester credits/9 quarter credits; 45 hours of in-person and asynchronous online learning activities, 225 - 300 internship placement hours.
ASU online courses: 3 - 4 U.S. semester/4.5 - 6 quarter credits; 45 - 60 contact hours

Academic Culture

CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The integrated academic course, which correlates with the internship, is taught in-person and asychronously. Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by CIEE and the host organization.

ASU Courses: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Students participate in a full-time in-person internship and required academic course featuring both in-person class sessions and online asynchronous work designed to help students develop professional and intercultural competencies to complement their internship experience.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of in-class and online engagement and preparation, and specific assessments such as project work, presentations, and examinations.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person.
