When in Rome, make Chinese food.
July 14, in the morning, level 1 and 2 students did their Chinese presentations in class summarizing what they had learned the previous week. Everybody did an excellent job! Level 3 student learned about the eating habits of the people in China. The people in the north prefer to eat noodles while people in the south prefer to eat rice. The people in the north also prefer to salty things; people in the south prefer sweet things; people on the west prefer spicy things. Students also watched a documentary of the different main dished in China. The class got hungry watching it.
At noon, students went to a place near the university for a group lunch. During the meal, the waitress would deliver many different types of food to us. Students voted “sweet and spicy chicken” as their favorite dish.
Students went back to the school after everyone was done eating and played a traditional Chinese game “ji gu chuan hua” where students have to pass around a water bottle while a Chinese song plays, and when the songs stops, the person with the bottle has to answer the Chinese questions posed by the teachers.
In the afternoon, our program coordinator and director led an orientation for our upcoming Shanghai trip and gave us lots of great suggestions about how to stay safe and where to buy the best things!
After the Shanghai trip excursion orientation, students went to do their Community Conversations. Level 1‘s topic was asking people about their hobbies. Level 2 students went to the Nanjing University souvenir shop and asked locals about picking out gifts for their family and friends. Level 3 students went to a Hanfu shop, which is a traditional Chinese clothing shop. Students were surprised how pretty the Chinese clothes were. After that, students went to the market to get ingredients for the dishes they would make for their host families. Most students got tomatoes, eggs, and scallion to make “番茄炒蛋“.The students really loved the dish they made.
