K-Pop Immersion

Our students had the freedom to embark on a variety of adventures during the Kpop Immersion Program. Their independent spirit was evident during their free time, when they had the opportunity to decide where to go. One consistent element throughout these three weeks was their shopping escapades. Many students discovered unique souvenirs near Insadong, the location of our hotel. They thoughtfully selected classic fans or cute drum key chains as gifts for their loved ones. The charm of the local boutiques and snack shops piqued their interest, inspiring them to experiment with new styles and cuisines during our first week in South Korea.

Once they overcame the initial jet lag, the students were able to explore the city more extensively. They discovered numerous K-pop album stores in various areas, including major shopping centers, bookstores, and cities like Sinchon and Hongdae. They swiftly adapted to the city's public transportation system, strategically planning their trips on subways and buses to ensure they could carry all the albums they desired and return before curfew.

Others found some delectables from places like the Myeongdong and the Gwangjang market, where street food can be found. They got to try many variations of foods that are popular now, such as tteokbokki, fish cake, and hotteok. They would return to the hotel to discuss other foods in restaurants they got to try, such as mul-naengmyeon for lunch and the ever-so-famous bingsu for dessert. Each student found their favorites and visited similar restaurants throughout the program.

After purchasing the albums and food, the students quickly found their styles and needs through Korean brand stores. Some found unique designs in subway markets in Dongdaemun, Sinchon, Yongsan, and many more places. One of the last places to shop was at the biggest shopping mall yet: The Starfield Coex Mall. Located in Gangnam, this mall is known for being the largest underground shopping mall and the Byeolmadang library. It was one of the last destinations to get whatever last things the students wanted to take home.

As it comes to a close, the students can say they visited many shopping centers and found small pop-ups, new friends, and priceless memories. We pack our luggage now, holding everything we purchased, hoping everything will stay intact when we arrive home. The students had a chance to take a piece of their memories home. As they unpack when we arrive, the students can tell all the stories of where they've been from and what they've brought home. It's been a wonderful journey that we hope the students will remember forever.
