Merendando in the Market: La Boqueria
Buenas!
This first week the students were able to see various integral elements to what makes Barcelona a spectactular city. One of those attractions is the Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, also known more commonly as "La Boqueria."
La Boqueria is a series of stands or paradas where venders sell different types of foods ranging from fruits, vegetables, meats, and cheeses to the fishmongers and butchers. One of the members of the CIEE staff has family who owns and operates one of the paradas. This particular parada sells primarily fruits; however, as the times have changed so have the offerings of the market. Now, in order to draw in more money from what would be onlookers, most paradas offer fresh juices and cut fruits as opposed to the traditional open air market offerings. The students were given their choose of fresh juice from the stand to try. ¡Ñam!
The market is located in the middle of Las Ramblas and is one of the most visited places in Barcelona. After learning about the history of La Boqueria, the students were able to walk around and try out their Spanish skills ordering empanadas, croquetas, quesos, or any other kind of goodies they wanted!
Hopefully the photos don't make the readers too hungry!
Hasta la próxima aventura.
