Wednesday

Casa Museo Hermanas Mirabal

To continue learning about Dominican culture and history, students visited the Casa Museo Hermanas Mirabal where they participated in a tour about the life and legacy of the Mirabal sisters. The sisters dedicated their lives to advocating for women’s rights within the Dominican Republic during the Trujillo dictatorship, so learning about their legacy made a great activity for students to expand their knowledge on Dominican history, as well as social justice movements.

To debrief the experience walking through their family house, the Program Leaders facilitated a group activity where students reflected on what they saw, information they learned about their lives, and the lasting impact they had for women’s rights. Then, they competed in groups to create butterflies with their bodies, as seen below!

Thursday

Service

On Thursday, students were picked up to go to service. The students were expecting them, so there was immense joy upon our arrival. To begin the day, the students and children shared snacks together before playing games and dancing.

37 x Tablas

In the afternoon, students were taken to 37 x Tablas in Santiago’s city center. They started the visit with an opera vocalization practice. During this activity, students engaged in acting games, where they were laughing, relaxing, and having fun. To wrap up the activity, a juggler put on an act and showed the students a few tricks. To conclude, they all enjoyed various treats and returned to their homestays for a family-style dinner.
