Studying abroad is a transformative experience for high school students, offering them not just academic enrichment but also the opportunity to immerse themselves in new cultures. For our group of adventurous Global Navigators in Rome, this cultural immersion recently took the delicious form of an Italian cooking demonstration, where they learned the art of making the iconic Margherita pizza.

Our students, brimming with excitement, set off to a charming local restaurant in the heart of Rome. This wasn't just any restaurant; it was renowned for its traditional Italian cuisine and its commitment to teaching the next generation about the joys of cooking. The warm, inviting atmosphere was perfect for our eager learners.

Upon arrival, the students were greeted by one of the restaurant's chefs. Chef led the students into the demonstration cooking area, where they rolled up their sleeves and donned aprons and cooking/serving hat. The first lesson was on making the perfect pizza dough. Chef emphasized the importance of using high-quality ingredients – fine Italian flour, fresh yeast, a pinch of salt, and water. With a bowl of dough in front of them and gloves on their hands, each student kneaded their dough, learning the perfect technique of dough-making to achieve a smooth, elastic consistency.

Next, it was time to prepare the toppings. Chef introduced the students to San Marzano tomatoes, fresh basil, and mozzarella di bufala – the holy trinity of Margherita pizza. The students were amazed at how these simple ingredients could create such a flavorful masterpiece. They took great care in spreading the tomato sauce evenly, arranging the mozzarella slices, and placing fresh basil leaves on top.

With their pizzas assembled, it was time to bake. Chef demonstrated the traditional method using a wood-fired oven, explaining how the intense heat creates the perfect crispy crust while keeping the toppings fresh and vibrant. The students watched in awe as their pizzas transformed in the oven, bubbling and browning to perfection.

The moment of truth arrived as the students' pizzas were pulled from the oven. The aroma filled the kitchen and dining room, making everyone's mouth water in anticipation. Each student proudly took their first bite, savoring the delicious combination of flavors. The crust was crispy yet chewy, the tomato sauce rich and tangy, and the mozzarella delightfully creamy.

The joy on the students' faces was undeniable. They laughed and chatted, comparing their pizzas and sharing tips they picked up during the demonstration. Many expressed how much fun they had and how the experience deepened their appreciation for Italian cuisine. They felt a sense of accomplishment in having created something so delicious from scratch.

As the day came to a close, the students left the restaurant with more than just full stomachs. They carried with them new skills and a passion for cooking that they are eager to bring back home. This hands-on experience not only enriched their study abroad journey but also inspired a love for cooking that will last a lifetime. Our high school students in Rome are now ready to become master pizza chefs, bringing a slice of Italy back home with them.
