Honors Spanish Language & Culture

As the students continue to experience more and more of Spanish culture, today they entered the kitchen to make some of Spain's most beloved traditional foods. The culture of food in Spain is a deep part of daily life and learning the history and importance of these dishes was a fantastic experience for them.

The first dish they learned to make together was a traditional Spanish Tortilla (Spanish Omelette). They learned about the various ways it is eaten as well as the great debate amongst the Spanish as to whether you make your tortilla with OR without onions! They were pros in the kitchen flipping their tortillas twice and not spilling a drop!

They also made Paella! They learned about the plethora of options you have for your tortilla from traditional - with snails and rabbit - to less traditional options. They made their paella with sofrito (onions, peppers, garlic and tomato), green beans, seafood stock, chicken, squid, mussels, shrimp and, most importantly, bomba rice! While working together to produce their paella they discussed how making paella is a special event that brings family together - much like backyard bbq's in the States!

Finally, they made a special cake that is made for the pilgrims doing the Camino de Santiago. The Tarta de Santiago is special because it is made with almond flour to provide energy to those as they make their long trek!

From breaking and whisking eggs, to sifting sugar and chopping vegetables, they all worked together and created an incredible meal they then had the pleasure of sitting down to share! Surely, they will be bringing some of these recipes back home to share with their families!
