Cajón Flamenco
This week's culture activites include a wide range of musical experiences. ALC Group A sat with Guillermo to learn how to play the Cajón Flamenco, a staple in the world of Spanish music and art. The Cajón is used as the percussion instrument using sharp and deep sounds to create a vibrant experience for the audience. Made of wood, a few metal strings, a guitarlike opening on the back, this lightweight instrument from Perú has evolved into a masterpiece in the Spanish musical scence, especially of the multifaceted Flamenco dance.
Each member of Group A was able to learn how to play those sharp and deep sounds (Aguda y Grave) to get a feel for this cultural staple of the Iberian Penisula. Not only did they learn how to play several notes and chords but also were able to listen to a Cajón master play popular music on the radio now. The learning here at CIEE extends far beyond the classroom!
