Baile Jarocho Style
Merida is known for many cultural aspects. One of them is by their music. Our Global Navigators were able to participate in a Jarocho class. In this class they learned about what Jarocho was, how it became famous in the Yucatan and how to dance it as well. The kids had a blast! They learned some moves such as "cafe con pan" or "Cara de pato pan!" (make sure to ask the kids to show you how you dace that delicacy.
Aside from learning a bit of background on the music, its history and music. The musical group explained to us how Jarocho is only alive thanks to their ancestors. There are no actual lyrics or way of learning this music. It is just what their grandparents and great grandparents have passed on to the families. Our group was composed of 4 young adults (the great grandchildren) who have set to teach others about Jarocho with goals of it growing and never disapearing from the Yucatecan culture. Super neat right?
We all had a grand time (even though we were sweating like crazy!). All kids got a chance to show off their dancing skills and dance along the group. Towards the end of the class, our students got to touch and play the instruments. Hope you enjoy some pictures.
