And the Russian adventure begins!
After a challenging travel day of flight delays, this brave group of seven high school students finally reached the Venice of the North, and were able to begin their three-week adventure exploring St. Petersburg through art!
It has been almost two weeks since we first arrived, and our days have been full of visits to art museums and contemporary art spaces, and exploration of different varieties and expressions of art in the city. The world is our canvas during this three week exploration! Highlights have included a visit to the Hermitage, Lendoc documentary film studio, as well as several different "master-classes" in folk art (Matreshka doll painting!), cityscape art, and animation.
The connecting thread providing the groundwork for these three weeks is a course, which provides the backdrop for understanding the trends of art in Russia's history, and which helps students to see the details of the city, all of which tell a story. Tasked with creating a video of the city, the final project of the course will be the product of students' exploration of St. Petersburg. Students gather material throughout the city, and have already begun to montage their footage into an expression of their unique vision of the city.
