Mediterranean Marine Ecosystems & Sustainability

After a morning of birdwatching, we traded our binoculars for life vests. Tierra y Mar staff took us on a coasteering tour jumping, swimming and climbing along the shore. Along the tour some of us, myself included, overcame our fear of heights, while our adrenaline seekers felt right at home.

The view was picturesque; and we weren’t the only ones who thought so. We shared the coast alongside a commercial shoot which was cool to watch. After a snack and water refill courtesy of the Tierra y Mar team, we walked back to camp.

Dinner at camp was buffet style. However, the kitchen team payed special attention to serving small food portions and encouraging seconds to lower food waste. After refueling from our busy day we moved on to night games on the basketball court. The partner game “tingo-tengo-tango” was a huge hit. It was elimination style and a close final competition between Ana and Imara against Jayden and Matt. Congrats to Jayden and Matt for winning the championship round!! Who knew this group was so competitive? Everyone gave it their all.

At night students wound down by star gazing, reading, journaling, playing cards and hanging out with friends to the sound of crashing waves.

Day two was our big hike day. We hiked to Coll Baix beach, stopping for a midway watermelon snack. The views walking down to the cove made the sweaty uphill all worth it. Smooth pebbles, clear water and a few pushy goats awaited us at the bottom. We enjoyed picnic lunches, shade in the pop up tents and throwing around a football and volleyball in the water—in addition to some well-deserved naps. We left the beach in style on a massive catamaran laying out on the two nets listening to music and taking in the view. After a quick pit stop for ice cream in Port de Alcudia we were back at camp enjoying the sunset over the ocean for the last time. At night, students transformed the picnic tables into a craft center and makeshift beauty salon. Some were making friendship bracelets while others painted nails and gave Tierra y Mar staff a makeover.

Our final day at camp started with water sports. We split up to try kayaking, balancing on a giant stand up paddle board and snorkeling. We identified the sea grass we’d learned about in biology class, swam after fish and saw some sea cucumbers. After three days in the sun we switched it up in the afternoon with a surprise craft activity--tie-dye!

Our camping trip consisted of pushing our comfort zones, deepening connections and lots of henna by Grace (thank you, Grace!) We left with a few more bug bites and a lot of gratitude for the experience Tierra y Mar provided us. ¡Hasta la proxima!
