Academic Projects

Additional application materials are required.

A for-credit part-time internship allows students the opportunity to have practical work experience in a company within engineering, technology, or science sectors, in English or Spanish. In addition to the on-site business experience, students participating in an internship program have a weekly classroom component, which provides academic support to their practical experience. In the past, some of our internship students have worked with business groups renowned for their commitment to innovation and sustainability. These groups focus on renewable energy, finance and consulting and business development.

Directed Independent Research (in English or in Spanish) is for qualified students who have demonstrated academic rigor and curiosity toward a particular research topic. Independent research topics will be approved by the CIEE Seville Director and the home institution and must reflect a topic that is relevant to Spain. To be accepted into this course, students must submit a structured proposal with the topic of exploration, and the significance of the research topic as it relates to Seville/Spain, methodology, a literature review, and a schedule of research milestones. Upon research completion, students will present their findings to a panel of academics.

Academics

Academics

This program is designed for students looking to immerse themselves in Spanish culture while exploring areas of engineering, technology, and sciences. Coursework will combine area study courses with electives taught at CIEE Seville or a CIEE partner institution and can be taken in English and/or Spanish.

Universidad de Sevilla (Regular Courses)
Also known as the University of Seville, this university has been one of Spain’s leading institutions of higher learning since the 16th century and now hosts more than 75,000 students. Its many schools, departments, and institutes serve the educational needs of Spain’s most populous region.

Cursos Concertados at Universidad de Sevilla
Part of the University of Seville, Cursos Concertados is run by members of the faculty of engineering and the faculty of sciences. This institution has been working for more than 30 years to create programs and offer courses for international students.

Arizona State University
Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar, so you can study abroad with CIEE while continuing to meet all your academic goals.

Note for students taking courses directly from local host institution(s):
Students are required to stay in Seville until they have completed their exams. Official host institutions’ fall exams are in January, and official host institutions’ spring exams are in June. However, early exams in December and May may be possible, and they should be confirmed on an individual basis with the professor at the start of the regular semester session, during the add/drop period. Please note that it is up to the discretion of each professor to allow the taking of final exams before the start of the official examination period. As it is impossible to confirm your exam schedule prior to your arrival, if your priority is to leave Seville as soon as your university finals are finished, please book an airline ticket with a low change fee or a flexible departure date.

Language placement
Prior to departure for Seville, all students take an online placement exam. Results determine appropriate placement in language courses. Placement in many upper-level courses depends on a high score.

Language support
Our Language Resource Center is staffed by language professors and Spanish students majoring in Spanish philology, who help students with reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking. Tutorials on university course content are also offered. Students agree to speak only Spanish to encourage language and cultural acquisition.

Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Academic Culture

Local university classes are generally lecture-style, and they can involve less guidance than U.S. students are accustomed to; syllabi can be less detailed and there are fewer assessments. CIEE courses typically follow U.S.-style, with carefully monitored attendance, regular assignments and exams, and participation all being important factors in grading.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

CIEE classes and Cursos Concertados at the University of Seville are scheduled Monday through Thursday and meet twice a week. EUSA and University of Seville regular courses are typically scheduled Monday through Friday. CIEE classes are open to CIEE students only. Cursos Concertados are only open to international students. EUSA and University of Seville regular courses are open to local and international students.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end. You’ll need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you’re given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your CIEE location.

Grading

For CIEE classes, the U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are typically graded on weekly quizzes, exams, homework assignments, oral presentations, and class engagement. Each instructor determines the exact breakdown of grades. Attendance is mandatory, and absences may affect the final grade of the course. University professors assign numerical grades based on a 10-point scale, which CIEE converts to recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents.

ASU grading: As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any CIEE student. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” grading options are not allowed for CIEE students. Please see the CIEE Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.
