Your CIEE Summer Intern and Study Abroad program in London lasts 6 weeks and features three key components: A part-time internship with an international organization (15-20 hours per week), an internship seminar, and a 3-credit academic course taught by CIEE faculty. Enhance your experience with cultural and extracurricular activities while building career skills, expanding your professional network, and immersing yourself in British culture. CIEE London features classrooms, a student lounge, a library, a study space, a student life office, an academic advising office, a café, and a garden terrace.

Requirements

All Intern + Study Abroad in London students take the required 3-credit part-time internship with the embedded internship seminar plus one additional course for a total of 6-7 semester credits. 

Program Credit

 Total credit: 6-7 U.S. semester/9-10.5 quarter credits  

Course Credit

  • CIEE Courses: 3-4 U.S. semester/4.5-6 quarter credits; 45-60 contact hours 
  • CIEE Internship: 3 U.S. semester/4.5 quarter credits; 4.5 quarter credits: 45 hours of in-person and asynchronous online learning activities and 100-120 hours at the internship placement

Academic Culture

The academic environment at CIEE London offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture. 

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday, providing students with a concentrated schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This condensed format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in London. 

In addition to lectures, CIEE courses often incorporate local field trips and co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of London and its surroundings. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context. The embedded internship course is taught with a mix of in-person sessions and online asynchronous sessions. 

Attendance is considered mandatory in CIEE courses, with absences impacting final grades. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits. 

Overall, the academic environment at CIEE London offers a comprehensive and immersive educational experience, combining rigorous coursework with experiential learning opportunities to enrich students' academic and cultural understanding. 

Class Format

Class and/or work hours may be scheduled Monday-Friday. Attendance in CIEE classes is strictly enforced, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported and augmented online by CIEE’s learning management system, Canvas. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel away from the city when classes are in session. 

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. The embedded internship course will be assessed in assignments and activities, completion of 100-120 internship hours, and feedback from the internship supervisor.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.

Program Fees

CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel protection with benefits.

Financial Aid

CIEE offers the most grants and scholarships of any study abroad organization, including $8 million/year in travel grants, merit-based scholarships, institutional and MSI grants, and Gilman Go Global Grants.
