Life-Changing Study Abroad Experience in London
By: Brooke Hornstein
When I first arrived in London to study abroad at University College London (UCL) through CIEE, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. This was my first time ever coming to Europe, so I didn’t know what to expect. It’s one thing to visit a city as a tourist, but living in London is a whole new adventure. From figuring out the Tube to embracing tea culture (my first time having tea by the way), this semester has been full of surprises, growth, and unforgettable experiences.
London greets you with its iconic red double-decker buses, charming neighborhoods, and constant buzz of energy. It’s the perfect mix of vibrant city life and historical charisma. From The Shard to Buckingham Palace, London has it all. Coming from a small town in Pennsylvania, it took me a couple of days to adjust to the fast pace, but once I started exploring, I ABSOLUTELY fell in love.
UCL is a hub for diversity and curiosity. My classes have been very interesting, but the UK education system is vastly different from the US system and requires some getting used to. I’m taking Hebrew and Jewish Studies classes for my minor. They have broadened my perspective on language and culture and challenged me in ways I didn’t expect. The teaching style here is more independent, which has taught me to manage my time better and take initiative.
One of my favorite things about London is how much there is to see and do. I’ve explored so many areas, like Islington, Angel, Covent Garden, Shoreditch, Soho, and so much more! I LOVE Borough Market. The viral chocolate-covered strawberries are just as good as they look on TikTok. The mac and cheese from Bath is amazing; I get mine with crispy onions on top!
Download the Citymapper app immediately! It’s the biggest life saviors and can be used in cities all over Europe. I suggest investing in an Oyster card (for the bus and Tube) depending on where you are located in the city compared to your classes. I purchased the unlimited month pass for my first month here and discovered I didn’t use it as much as I thought I would. I now use Apple Pay every time I use public transportation.
Definitely take advantage of CIEE’s programming and events! London is a bustling city, but it can also feel expensive and overwhelming at times. CIEE’s planned events and activities provide a perfect way to explore hidden gems and experience something you might not have discovered on your own. From historical tours to cultural events, the programming truly enhances your time abroad!
One of my favorite CIEE-organized experiences was a day trip to Oxford. It was incredible to wander through the charming university town. I also took the opportunity to travel on the weekends and after the program ended. I was fortunate enough to visit Munich, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon, Nazare, Zurich, Interlaken, Vienna, Prague, Paris, Normandy, Florence, and Rome. Each destination offered its own unique culture, history, and unforgettable memories.
Studying abroad in London with CIEE has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The city has limitless opportunities, but the program truly made the experience immersive. I’ve connected with people from all over the world and gained perspectives that have enriched my understanding of global cultures.
If you’re considering studying abroad, my advice is simple: say yes to adventure! Immerse yourself in everything the program offers, step out of your comfort zone, and explore as much as you can. You won’t regret it!
